Book Review: Monsoon
While my heart was reluctant
about me writing, this time my brain won and I’m finally mustering up some
courage to pull my hands out and write in this annoyingly cold weather, all
cuddled up in my warm cozy blanket. I’m hoping you’re warm too.
Today’s review is going to be
about the latest book I’ve finished reading: ‘Monsoon’ by Subin Bhattarai. I
have to admit it shamefully that this is the first ever novel that I’ve read
which is written in Nepali. I’m so sorry, Nepali writers, I couldn’t be
faithful!! I always felt that reading Nepali wouldn’t be as easy as reading an
English novel but this time, I’m wrong and I enjoyed the book to the fullest.

The protagonist of the novel is
Mr. Subhan Upadhyay. The name really matched the writer (Subhan-Subin) so I had
to turn the cover page to check if they were the same person. But they aren’t.
You know, Subhan is just like one of the single guys we get to read in the
memes these days. He is single, has always been single, is an engineer, tried
weaving relationships with few girls but has been unsuccessful and wants to be
in a relationship. And this time, on the occasion of his friend Rameshwor’s
wedding, Subhan and the last one of the three musketeers, Sundar, have decided
to fold a girl at any cost(s]6L k6\ofpg]).
We
Nepalese understand it, don’t we?
Wait until you meet Monsoon.
Yeah, that’s a name of THE girl. What a lovely name! Don’t you think so? I
think so. And undoubtedly Subhan thought so too. That must be one of the
reasons he falls in love with her. Oh and she’s as gorgeous as her name. She
must be. Otherwise why else would Subhan fall so hard for her? And Sundar too,
and most probably a couple of dozens of guys around Dharan too. So is it going
to be a love triangle between two friends or does the main guy get the girl? I’m
sure you’ll love to find it out by reading the novel yourself.
During the whole reading, I was
confused if I was more like Subhan or Monsoon? Because I usually do this…comparing
myself with the characters of the novel I’m reading. I had this internal war
that l’m more like Monsoon because she studies in BPKIHS, she’s stubborn like
me, somewhat coldhearted (admits shyly). And sometimes my character was more
inclined towards Subhan too. But at the end, I realized that I’m not Monsoon. I
can never be her. Why? Find it out yourself by reading the book yourself.
Shoo!! Go to the bookstore now, already!
Would it be too quick to call Mr.
Bhattarai the Nicholas Sparks of Nepal? Love story so soothing to read and
hopefully we can see these characters in movies sometimes soon too. There
are some parts in the book so funny that I had to laugh out loud which then
urged my little sister to nag me to tell her the funny part. Happens always!
Thank you, Subin Bhattarai for
writing my story and everyone else’s story so beautifully. Thank you for making
me nostalgic about my stay in Dharan and my entire four years of BPKIHS. I miss
being there so much. Thank you for researching so carefully about the nooks and
alleys of Dharan and BPKIHS. I don’t know even if I can write as much about
these places as you’ve written (including about the girls’ hostel too).
I’ve shared my emotions with the
story by laughing with it, getting angry at the characters, crying when they
were sad and cursing sometimes…okay most of the times (Okay I curse a lot, I’m
sorry!).
Please do buy and read the novel.
And do share with me, your experience about the book. I’d love to know.
Until I read again, Adios Amigos!!
And Happy New Year 2017!!
Until I read again, Adios Amigos!!
